Clogging Issues in Venturi, Cyclone, and Packed Bed Scrubbers

The buildup of undesirable substances — clogging and fouling — negatively affects the operation of a scrubber: it interrupts its working cycle and causes complications and increased maintenance frequency. The clogging of an air scrubber occurs due to the high particulate matter (PM) concentrations in the gas that is being treated. Over time PM accumulates on the surface of the scrubber leading to less efficient air scrubbing and overall system failure.

Most modern air scrubbers suffer from clogging and other detrimental effects of high PM concentrations. Often clogging is a result of certain design aspects — the way inlet gas enters and exits the scrubber, cleaning liquid introduction and discharge, and more.

Venturi wet air scrubbers are prone to clogging of the throat, which is the narrowest part of the scrubber, and solids buildup on the rods. Gas moving at high velocities forms small droplets necessary for the collection of the particles. Buildup removal is problematic as venturi scrubber throats are difficult to access. Besides clogging, venturi wet air scrubbers suffer from corrosion of their surfaces from exposure to high-velocity gas.

The mjor maintenance problem of cyclonic spray scrubbers is the clogging of nozzles through which a cleaning liquid is introduced and scrubbed gas enters and exits. This problem can not be eradicated; to minimize the effects of particulate matter buildup the installation of easily accessible nozzles is recommended. Similar to the venturi scrubbers, erosion of the side walls of the cyclonic spray scrubbers is also a problem.

Packed bed scrubbers possess significant limitations because of their design: these scrubbers are not suitable for high concentrations of PM and high dust loading as the packed bed clogs easily. Packed bed scrubbers are the hardest of all air scrubbers to clean as the packing material is often very fine and hard to access.

Air scrubber clogging and solids buildup is a serious issue that is often hard or even impossible to eradicate. Unlike conventional wet air scrubbers, Scroiler™ does not clog because of its unique design. Inside Scroiler™, surfaces do not experience abrasion or corrosion, allowing core components to be constructed from plastic; these components do not need replacement.
