Air pollution control by different types of wet air scrubbers

A wet air scrubber is an air treatment device that removes particulate matter from gas streams by catching the particles into liquid droplets directly on contact in order to provide air pollution control. The basic activity of wet scrubbers is to perform contact between the scrubbing liquid or simply water and, the particulate to be collected.

The air pollution control can be achieved in different ways as the particles are cracked into the so-called impaction target, which is wetted surface as packed bed scrubbers or individual droplets as in spray scrubbers. The principle of wet air scrubber operation is the same as that in filters (inertial impaction, interception, and diffusion).

Nowadays different wet scrubber designs are distinguished depending on the ways of achieving the contact between the scrubbing liquid and the particulates. The major types of wet air scrubbers include plate scrubber, packed bed scrubber, spray scrubber, venturi scrubber, cyclone dust collector, baffle scrubber, impingement-entrainment scrubber, fluidized bed scrubber.

  • Plate scrubber consists of a vertical tower including one or more horizontal plates or trays. “Gas enters the bottom of the tower and must pass through perforations in each plate as it flows countercurrent to the descending water stream.” Herewith, the collection efficiency of the wet air scrubber depends on the diameter of the perforations.
  • Packed bed scrubber is similar to packed bed gas absorber, however, its efficiency decreases as packing size increases.
  • Spray scrubber uses liquid drops atomized by spray nozzles to collect particulate pollutants. Such features as droplet size, gas velocity, liquid/gas ratio, and droplet trajectories can influence the collection efficiency of the wet air scrubber.
  • Venturi scrubber applies a moving gas stream to atomize liquids into droplets resulting in high relative velocities between gas and particles and consequently, collection of particulates.
  • Cyclone dust collector, where drops are inputted into the gas stream of a cyclone to collect particulate pollutants. Herewith, it is possible to direct the spray outward from a central manifold or inward from the collector wall.
  • The operation of the impingement-entrainment scrubber is based on the gas that confronts with a liquid surface to provide a gas exit. Additionally, the gas exit design of the scrubber allows minimizing the loss of entrained droplets.
  • A fluidized bed scrubber has a zone of fluidized packing. To be more precise, “gas passes upward through the packing, while liquid or water is sprayed up from the bottom and/or flows down over the top of the fluidized layer of packing”.

If you would like to make your contribution to improving air quality in order to provide air pollution control, you should choose a new type of wet scrubbers that is Multi-Vortex scrubber. Multi-Vortex wet air scrubber could apply water contaminated with dust, sand, and even small rocks to capture particulate matter, different types of dust and some gases from the air.  If you would like to buy Multi-Vortex wet air scrubber or have some questions, please contact us at info@optromix.com
