Damage of particulate pollutants to the lungs

People often consider that particulate pollutants are the result of fossil fuels, however, natural resources, for instance, wood can present damage if burned. Every day people breathe particulates such as gases, nitrogen dioxide, produced by diesel exhausts, sulfur dioxide, released from burning coal and oil, and ozone that when formed at ground level can be very dangerous. Thus, particulate pollutants are considered to present the highest damage.

It should be noted that particulates or particulate matter (PM) are regarded as small parts of solids or liquids suspended in the air. Herewith, some of the pollutants are linked to road traffic, containing carbon emissions from engines as well as small units of metal and rubber that arise from vehicles because of engine wear and braking. Moreover, particulate pollutants that originated from road dust are also harmful. Other particulates include dust from building and industry, as well as wind-blown dust, sea salt, pollen, and soil particles.

It should be noted that most part of these pollutants are difficult to see and can be found even on a clear day. Although human nose and throats allow filtering the larger particles, however, some of the particulate pollutants are quite tiny for bodies to filter out. The thing is that these tiny particles are the most dangerous form of air pollution to human health because “they are 30 times smaller than the average human hair. ” Particulates with a size smaller than 2.5 micrometers are called PM 2.5.

Researchers claim that PM 2.5 is the most dangerous to human health because it can accumulate in the airway and get into the bloodstream. Additionally, almost two-fifths (38%) of PM 2.5 in the UK originates from domestic wood-burners and open fires, which are presented in just 7.5 % of homes. According to various researches, the health effects of particulates from air pollution contain premature death and the worsening of heart and lung disease, often increasing admissions to the hospital.

Wood-burning also presents a problem for air pollution control and human health. To be more precise, “domestic wood-burning is the single largest contributor to the UK’s emissions of fine particulate pollutants, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.” The thing is that conventional wood-burning stove releases about six times more particulates than a modern diesel lorry or 18 times more than a modern diesel car. Such a problem is extremely harmful to people with existing lung conditions such as asthma.

Nevertheless, the problem of PM 2.5 can be effectively solved by installing modern scrubbers. If you would like to make your contribution to improving air quality in order to provide air pollution control, you should choose a new type of wet scrubbers that is Multi-Vortex scrubber. Multi-Vortex wet air scrubber could apply water contaminated with dust, sand, and even small rocks to capture particulate pollutants, different types of dust and some gases from the air.

This type of scrubber is an ideal solution for ore and coal mining. Thus, it can be used in different mining, combustion and chemical processes to capture gases. Also, in some cases, the unique Multi-Vortex scrubber design allows utilizing cheaper reagents to capture the pollutant gas with more efficiency than a standard wet scrubber.
